Welcome to Ninebon Mark's Betta aka fighting fish Page.

This site is dedicated to betta enthusiasts around the world.  As you may have already known, there are more than a few dozen types of wild betta  with Betta Splendens being the most popular.  Betta Splendens  originates from the regions of Cambodia, Vietnam and Northern Thailand.

It was the Thais who first domesticated this fish.  They where primarily bred for fighting by villagers after the planting season.  Many years of selective breeding resulted in the development of elite fighters that we have nowadays.  Due to their popularity and hardiness, a longfin colorful version of Betta Splendens was also developed for their beauty.   Those beautiful bettas were developed into many forms which include  Crowntails, Halfmoons and Doubletails.  They also come in many colors and patterns like marble, black, opaque, orange, yellows, butterfly and many more.

I am from Penang, also known as "The Pearl of the Orient".  It is a northern state of Malaysia. It takes about 2 hrs driving North  to reach  the Southern  border of Thailand.  In this website I will try to give a truthful and accurate picture of bettas in Malaysia during the good old days and also present times.  The information provided is through word of mouth from people I have met who are/were involved in the breeding and fighting of this wonderful fish.   I will also talk about my experience in breeding this wonderful fish.

You may wonder why I use the word Ninebon.  Ninebon refers to the host of betta arenas in Penang. And since I am the host of this website,  I reckon I am able to call myself Ninebon :-)
